Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 306
Verse 8 of 10

Goodness Isn't Forced; It Grows Once the Heart Turns

Dhan so vaylaa jit mai satgur mili-aa so saho chit aa-i-aa.
Blessed is that time, when I met the True Guru, and my Husband Lord came into my consciousness.
mahaa anand sahj bha-i-aa man tan sukh paa-i-aa.
I became so very blissful, and my mind and body found such a natural peace.
so saho chit aa-i-aa man vasaa-i-aa avgan sabh visaaray.
My Husband Lord came into my consciousness; I enshrined Him within my mind, and I renounced all vice.
jaa tis bhaanaa gun pargat ho-ay satgur aap savaaray.
When it pleased Him, virtues appeared in me, and the True Guru Himself adorned me.
say jan parvaan ho-ay jinHee ik naam dirhi-aa dutee-aa bhaa-o chukaa-i-aa.
Those humble beings become acceptable, who cling to the One Name and renounce the love of duality.
i-o kahai naanak Dhan so vaylaa jit mai satgur mili-aa so saho chit aa-i-aa. ||8||
Thus says Nanak: blessed is the time when I met the True Guru, and my Husband Lord came into my consciousness. ||8||

In plain words

What a blessed moment it was when I found true wisdom and the One came alive in my heart!

A deep joy filled me, a natural calm settled into my whole being, and goodness quietly grew in me like a gift.

Goodness isn't forced into you — it grows on its own, like a gift, once your heart truly turns.
The deeper layer

After the verses about pride, a burst of gratitude: dhan so vaylaa — blessed was the moment the Guru was met and the Beloved came into my consciousness. The joy is sahj — natural, unforced peace filling mind and body. And note how virtue arrives: when it pleased Him, virtues appeared in me — goodness isn't manufactured by effort but given, blossoming once the heart turns. This verse is the personal testimony at the poem's heart: the speaker, having coaxed their own mind for six verses, remembers the moment it all changed — and it changed by grace, not by force.

A Question to Sit With

Can you remember a moment when something shifted inside you for the better?
