When we forget what matters most, we drift and get stuck to things that can't fill us.
All the showy rituals in the world can't do what a little honest remembering does — that's the doorway to real freedom.
The one cautionary verse, handled gently. Forgetting leaves a heart engrossed in attachment, with Maya's filth clinging — the sticky pull of grasping. And its sharp observation: the proud perform all sorts of rituals but shy away from the Name — you can be busy with religious performance and still avoid the one simple, humbling thing. The 'path of death' darkened by attachment is the exhausting circling of a forgetful life. But the verse ends with the open door: the Gurmukh meditates and finds the gate of salvation — the way out was never locked, just quietly waiting behind the showy noise.
What's the difference between doing something to look good and doing it because you mean it?
