Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
People don't like to think about death. They try to hide from it, afraid it will come and take them away.
But the One is inside and outside everything, and no one can hide from Him.
How can anyone hold on to a life the One wants back? Everything is His, and He takes back what is His.
Those who follow their own will run around crying, trying every medicine and cure.
The Master takes back what is His. The ones who live by the Word are kept safe.
Everything and everyone belongs to the One, who never loses track of what is His.
The verse looks straight at a fear many people feel. Jag maran na bhaa-i-aa — the world does not like death and tries to hide from it. People fear jam, the messenger who comes at the end, will take them away.
The verse does not pretend the fear is silly. It gently shows a deeper truth. The One is inside and outside, so nothing can be hidden from Him. Everything belongs to Him. So the frantic grabbing, trying all medicines and remedies to hold on forever, only wears us out. The comfort is not a promise that nothing ever ends. It is a deeper peace: you, and everyone you love, belong to a One who never loses track of what is His. Think of a library book that goes back to its home shelf. It is not lost. It is where it belongs. Those who live by the Guru's Word are kept safe.
Does it feel steadier to think of yourself as belonging to something that never loses you?
