Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 314
Verse 3 of 4

Not Having It Figured Out Is Why You Take Shelter

ham moorakh mugaDh sarnaagatee mil govind rangaa raam raajay.
I am foolish and ignorant, but I have taken to His Sanctuary; may I merge in the Love of the Lord of the Universe, O Lord King.
gur poorai har paa-i-aa har bhagat ik mangaa.
Through the Perfect Guru, I have obtained the Lord, and I beg for the one blessing of devotion to the Lord.
mayraa man tan sabad vigaasi-aa jap anat tarangaa.
My mind and body blossom forth through the Word of the Shabad; I meditate on the Lord of infinite waves.
mil sant janaa har paa-i-aa naanak satsangaa. ||3||
Meeting with the humble Saints, Nanak finds the Lord, in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. ||3||

In plain words

I don't have it all figured out — so I simply come and take shelter, asking only to love more.

In good company, my heart blossoms open, and there I find the One.

Not having it all figured out is exactly why you come and take shelter — and ask simply to love more.
The deeper layer

The verse is refreshingly humble: I am foolish and ignorant — I don't have the answers — but I have taken to Sanctuary. Notice the move: not-knowing isn't a reason to stay away; it's exactly why you come and take shelter. And the one thing asked for is not cleverness but more devotion — I beg for the one blessing of love. Where does the heart blossom? In the Sat Sangat, good company. The whole path here is gentle and reachable: admit you don't have it figured out, take shelter, ask to love more, and keep good company. The blossoming takes care of itself.

A Question to Sit With

Does admitting 'I don't know' feel like a weakness or actually a kind of honesty and strength?
