In plain words

I searched and searched, and found my truest Friend — not far away, but right inside me.

Within the golden fortress of my own body, a jewel was waiting all along.

By great good fortune I found the One, and Nanak is filled with its sweetness.

After all the searching outside, the truest treasure turns out to be right inside you.
The deeper layer

This one is about finding your truest Friend inside yourself.

Gurmukh dhoondh dhoodhaydi-aa har sajan laDhaa — following the Guru, I searched and searched, and found the One, my Friend. A gurmukh is someone who faces the Guru, the true teacher, and follows the Guru's way.

Where was the Friend? Kanchan kaa-i-aa kot garh vich — inside the golden fort of my own body. Har har heeraa ratan hai — the One is a jewel, a diamond. Mayraa man tan viDhaa — its brightness shines right through my mind and body.

This is the raag's favorite discovery. After all the searching out there, the Friend is found within. The searching was not wasted. It just needed to turn around.

Think of your body and heart as a castle. It is not an empty place to run away from. It is a treasure house with the most precious thing already inside. What you were looking for was the nearest thing all along.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you usually look for happiness — and could some of it already be inside you?
