O Lord, shower Your Mercy upon servant Nanak, that he may ever chant the Name of the Lord; through the Name of the Lord, he is saved. ||1||

In plain words

The Perfect True Guru plants the Name of the One deep inside all who meet Him.

Those who remember the Name lose all their restless wanting and hunger.

Those who remember the Name — even the Messenger of Death cannot come near them.

O One, be kind to servant Nanak, so he always remembers the Name. Through the Name, he is carried across.

Something planted in a remembering heart quiets restless hunger and leaves no room for fear.
The deeper layer

This one says: when the Name is planted in you, the hungry wanting and the fear both go quiet.

The Perfect Guru plants the Name inside a person, like a seed. And look what it does: "tis kee tarisnaa bhukh sabh utrai" — all their craving (tarisnaa, a thirsty kind of wanting) and hunger go away. The endless "always more" goes quiet.

Think of a kid in a toy shop wanting one thing, then the next, then the next. Now picture that same kid at home, happily building with what they already have. The wanting has simply settled.

Then comes a fearless line, the kind Guru Ram Das often sings in Aasaa. Jam, the Messenger of Death (the old picture of death coming to call), cannot even come near the one who remembers.

That is not a promise of never dying. It is a promise of not being haunted by the fear of it. A heart anchored in the One has no room for that dread.

And you do not have to fight the hunger or the fear by force. What is planted in you does the quieting. So Nanak asks for mercy: to remember the Name always, and through the Name to be carried across.

A Question to Sit With

What quiets the restless 'I want more' feeling in you?
