Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 32
Verse 2 of 5

The One Is Everywhere, Caring for What It Made

ਕਿਆ ਉਪਮਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਖੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
ki-aa upmaa tayree aakhee jaa-ay.
What Glories of Yours can be chanted?
ਤੂੰ ਸਰਬੇ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tooN sarbay poor rahi-aa liv laa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You are totally pervading everywhere; You love and cherish all. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Which of Your wonders could I even begin to sing?

You are everywhere at once, loving and caring for every single thing.

The One is everywhere at once — and everywhere, it is caring for what it made.
The deeper layer

The One is everywhere, and the One cares for everything that was made.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the warm center of the shabad. Ki-aa upmaa tayree aakhee jaa-ay — what praise of You can I even say? TooN sarbay poor rahi-aa liv laa-ay — You fill everything, and You love it all.

The other lines compare famous deeds with the One. That might sound cold, but it is not. It clears space for this tender idea. Think of a grandmother who seems to be in every room at a family gathering. She is not there to watch over people. She is there to feed and hug them. The One is everywhere so that the One can care for everyone.

A Question to Sit With

What does it change to imagine that the thing holding the universe together is loving, not indifferent?
