Even a Beautiful Day Feels Grey Without Love

In the month of Chayt, O my dear beloved, the pleasant season of spring begins.

But without my Husband Lord, O my dear beloved, my courtyard is filled with dust.

But my sad mind is still hopeful, O my dear beloved; my eyes are both fixed upon Him.

Beholding the Guru, Nanak is filled with wondrous joy, like a child, gazing upon his mother. ||4||

In plain words

Spring has come, the loveliest season — but without the One, even a beautiful day feels empty and grey.

Still my heart keeps hoping, my eyes stay fixed on the One — and just seeing true wisdom fills me with joy, like a child lighting up at the sight of their mother.

Even the most beautiful day feels grey without love — and the deepest joy is a child lighting up at their mother's face.
The deeper layer

The verse borrows from the season-poems: in the month of Chayt, spring begins — the world at its most beautiful — but without the Beloved, my courtyard fills with dust. Beauty without love to share it feels hollow; the loveliest day is grey if the heart is alone. Yet the verse won't despair — my sad mind is still hopeful, my eyes fixed on Him — and it ends in one of Gurbani's most heart-melting images: beholding the Guru, Nanak is filled with joy like a child gazing upon his mother. All the longing resolves into the simplest, safest joy there is: a child's face lighting up at the sight of the one who loves them most.

A Question to Sit With

Whose face makes you light up the way a small child lights up at their mom?
