Hope Held Faithfully Gets Answered at Last

har kee-aa kathaa kahaanee-aa mayray pi-aaray satguroo sunaa-ee-aa.
The True Guru has preached the sermon of the Lord, O my dear beloved.
gur vitrhi-ahu ha-o gholee mayray pi-aaray jin har maylaa-ee-aa.
I am a sacrifice to the Guru, O my dear beloved, who has united me with the Lord.
sabh aasaa har pooree-aa mayray pi-aaray man chindi-arhaa fal paa-i-aa.
The Lord has fulfilled all my hopes, O my dear beloved; I have obtained the fruits of my heart's desires.
har tuth-rhaa mayray pi-aaray jan naanak naam samaa-i-aa. ||5||
When the Lord is pleased, O my dear beloved, servant Nanak is absorbed into the Naam. ||5||

In plain words

True wisdom pointed my heart toward the One — and I'm so grateful I could give it everything.

All my hopes were filled, and my heart got what it most wanted.

Hope held faithfully gets answered — and the heart that longed is filled at last.
The deeper layer

After the longing of the earlier verses, this one is fulfillment and gratitude: the Guru preached the sermon of the One and united me — and the response is total: I am a sacrifice to the Guru, glad self-offering. All my hopes were fulfilled; I obtained the fruits of my heart's desires. The aching of the Chhant's middle verses gives way to a full heart. And note how it's fulfilled — not by the singer's cleverness but by being united and absorbed: the longing was answered as a gift. Hope, held faithfully, is met.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel when something you hoped and waited for finally comes true?
