The Hardest Battle Is Against Doubt

sarsi-arhay sarsi-arhay mayray bhaa-ee sabh meetaa raam.
Over-joyed - over-joyed are all my brothers and friends.
bikhmo bikham akhaarhaa mai gur mil jeetaa raam.
Meeting the Guru, I have won the most arduous battle in the arena of life.
gur mil jeetaa har har keetaa tootee bheetaa bharam garhaa.
Meeting the Guru, I am victorious; praising the Lord, Har, Har, the walls of the fortress of doubt have been destroyed.
paa-i-aa khajaanaa bahut niDhaanaa saanath mayree aap kharhaa.
I have obtained the wealth of so many treasures; the Lord Himself has stood by my side.
so-ee sugi-aanaa so parDhaanaa jo parabh apnaa keetaa.
He is the man of spiritual wisdom, and he is the leader, whom God has made His own.
kaho naanak jaaN val su-aamee taa sarsay bhaa-ee meetaa. ||4||1||
Says Nanak, when the Lord and Master is on my side, then my brothers and friends rejoice. ||4||1||

In plain words

Everyone around me is overjoyed — because, meeting the Guru, I've won the hardest, most important contest there is.

The walls of doubt that boxed me in came tumbling down, and I found the truest wealth, with the One right beside me.

Truly wise, and truly a leader, is the one the One makes His own.

Says Nanak: when the Master is on my side, all my family and friends rejoice.

The hardest battle in life is against doubt — and it's won not by fighting harder but with the One beside you.
The deeper layer

The hardest battle is not against other people. It is against doubt.

The song ends with shared happiness. Sarsi-arhay — overjoyed are all my brothers and friends. Good news spreads. When one heart finds peace, it lifts everyone around it.

Then comes a picture of a contest. Akhaarhaa is a wrestling ring. Bikhmo bikham akhaarhaa mai gur mil jeetaa — meeting the Guru, I won the hardest match of all. And who was beaten? Bharam garhaa, the fort of doubt. Bharam means doubt and confusion. Its walls came down.

Doubt is the fear and second-guessing that box us in. Think of freezing before a big test, sure you will fail. And this win did not happen alone. The One stood right beside the singer. We win life's real match by getting free of doubt, with the One at our side.

A Question to Sit With

What 'walls of doubt' would you most like to see come tumbling down in your life?
