Verse 1 of 4

Some Things Too Wonderful for Words; Sing Anyway

aasaa mehlaa 5.
Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
Inexpressible is the sermon of the inexpressible Lord; it cannot be known at all.
sur nar sur nar mun jan sahj vakhaanee raam.
The demi-gods, mortal beings, angels and silent sages express it in their peaceful poise.
sehjay vakhaanee ami-o banee charan kamal rang laa-i-aa.
In their poise, they recite the Ambrosial Bani of the Lord's Word; they embrace love for the Lord's Lotus Feet.
jap ayk alakh parabh niranjan man chindi-aa fal paa-i-aa.
Meditating on the One incomprehensible and immaculate Lord, they obtain the fruits of their heart's desires.
taj maan moh vikaar doojaa jotee jot samaanee.
Renouncing self-conceit, emotional attachment, corruption and duality, their light merges into the Light.
binvant naanak gur parsaadee sadaa har rang maanee. ||1||
Prays Nanak, by Guru's Grace, one enjoys the Lord's Love forever. ||1||

In plain words

Some things are too wonderful for words — the story of the One can't quite be told.

Still, calm and loving hearts sing it anyway, and letting go of pride and division, their small light melts into the great Light.

Some things are too wonderful for words — you sing them anyway, and the singing melts your small light into the great one.
The deeper layer

The shabad opens with a beautiful paradox: the One's 'sermon' is akath — unspeakable, too vast to put into words — and yet peaceful hearts sing it anyway. You don't stay silent before the unspeakable; you sing it, knowing the song can't contain it. And the singing works a change: renouncing self-conceit and division, their light merges into the Light (jot samaanee). The trying-to-tell isn't a failure even though it can't succeed — the very attempt, made with love, dissolves the pride and separateness that kept you feeling small and apart.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so wonderful that no words feel big enough for it?
