Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When I started singing songs of joy, my friends grew glad and my troubles just slipped away.
My peace and happiness kept growing. I was glad in the Name, and the One was kind to me.
I held on to the One's feet and stayed awake, and I met my Creator. The good day came, and I found peace. Every treasure is held in those feet.
Nanak prays: the One's servants always come to Him for shelter.
This one says joy sung out loud spreads to everyone near.
Sukh sohilrhay har gaavan laagay — I began to sing songs of joy to the One. Saajan sarsi-arhay dukh dusman bhaagay — my friends were glad, and my troubles and enemies ran off. Joy sung out loud is catching. It cheers everyone near and chases off gloom.
And the happiness keeps growing, not a flash but a rising tide. God Himself showed mercy. Then the good day came: subh divas aa-ay sahj paa-ay sagal niDh parabh paagay — the good day came, I found peace, and every treasure is at God's feet.
Think back over the whole night: the watchful waiting, the getting ready, the love too big for words. It all arrives here, at singing that lifts a whole circle of friends. Binvant naanak saran su-aamee — Nanak prays, and the Master's servants always seek His shelter. Watchful love, kept through the dark, opens onto a shared dawn of joy.
How does one person's joy or singing change the mood of a whole group?
