Don't Fight Bad Habits; Invite In Something Better

Run away, O sins; the Creator has entered my home.

The Beloved Lord of the Universe, the Lord of the World has revealed Himself; in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I chant His Name.

I have seen the Wondrous Lord; He showers His Ambrosial Nectar upon me, and by Guru's Grace, I know Him.

My mind is at peace, resounding with the music of bliss; the Lord's limits cannot be found.

Prays Nanak, God brings us to union with Himself, in the poise of celestial peace. ||2||

In plain words

Away with you too, all my worst habits — goodness itself has moved into my house!

The troublemakers inside me burned right off, and a music of bliss started playing in my heart.

You don't fight out your worst habits one by one — invite in something better, and they leave to make room.
The deeper layer

The joy continues to sweep house: run away, sins! the Creator has entered my home — and the demons within are burnt. Notice the order: the good doesn't have to fight the bad out; when the Creator moves in, the harmful things simply flee — light entering a room, and the shadows gone. And what fills the swept house is the music of bliss (anhad, the unstruck melody) and celestial peace. For a child: you don't clean out your worst habits by grimly attacking them one by one; you invite in something better, and they leave to make room. Fill the house with light, and the dark packs up.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing could you 'invite in' that would naturally crowd out a bad habit?
