The Giver Keeps Giving Even When We Forget

ਵਲਵੰਚ ਕਰਿ ਉਦਰੁ ਭਰਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥
valvanch kar udar bhareh moorakh gaavaaraa.
Practicing deceit, you fill your belly, you ignorant fool!
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
sabh kichh day rahi-aa har dayvanhaaraa.
The Lord, the Great Giver, continues to give you everything.

daataar sadaa da-i-aal su-aamee kaa-ay manhu visaaree-ai.
The Great Giver is always merciful. Why should we forget the Lord Master from our minds?

Join the Saadh Sangat, and vibrate fearlessly; all your relations shall be saved.

The Siddhas, the seekers, the demi-gods, the silent sages and the devotees, all take the Naam as their support.

Prays Nanak, vibrate continually upon God, the One Creator Lord. ||2||

In plain words

Even when we forget and grasp and get it wrong, the Great Giver keeps on giving to us anyway.

So why forget such kindness? Keep the One in mind, and your whole family is lifted along with you.

The Giver keeps giving even when we forget — which makes gratitude, not fear, the real reason to remember.
The deeper layer

The verse marvels at the One's unconditional generosity: even when a person is deceitful and grasping, the Great Giver continues to give them everything. The sun still rises on the forgetful; the food still comes. That's the wonder that makes the verse's question land: why should we forget such a Giver? Gratitude, not fear, is the motive here. And the blessing spreads: keeping the One in mind, all your relations are saved — your own turning toward the good lifts the whole family. Even the greatest beings, it adds, lean on the same support — no one is too big or too small for it.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you're given every day, whether or not you remember to be thankful?
