Own Your Words; Pleasures Are Empty Without Love

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 1.
Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਮੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰ ॥
mai gun galaa kay sir bhaar.
My virtue is that I carry the load of my words upon my head.
ਗਲੀ ਗਲਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ॥
galee galaa sirjanhaar.
The real words are the Words of the Creator Lord.
ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਹਸਣਾ ਬਾਦਿ ॥
khaanaa peenaa hasnaa baad.
How useless are eating, drinking and laughing,
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਯਾਦਿ ॥੧॥
jab lag ridai na aavahi yaad. ||1||
if the Lord is not cherished in the heart! ||1||

In plain words

If I have any goodness at all, it is this: I take responsibility for my own words and carry their weight myself.

The only words that are truly solid are the One's.

All the eating and drinking and laughing in the world is empty if the One is not held dear in the heart.

Own the weight of your own words — and know that all of life's pleasures are empty without love at the center.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak says his one good quality is owning his words, and he says life's fun is empty without love.

"I carry the load of my words upon my head." That means he takes responsibility for what he says. He carries its weight himself.

Then he compares. Only the Creator's words are fully real and solid. Ours are smaller, and we must answer for them. Think of signing your name on a promise. Once it is signed, it is yours to keep.

Last comes the everyday stuff: eating, drinking, laughing. These are not called bad. They are called empty if the One is not dear in the heart. The test is never the activity. It is whether love is inside it.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a word you have spoken whose weight you still need to carry yourself?
