if throughout his life, he gathers in that which is truly worth gathering? ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Why chase after anything else,

if all your life long you are gathering the one thing actually worth keeping?

Once you are gathering the one thing worth keeping, why chase all the rest?
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the Rahao, the center of the shabad. It sets priorities with one question.

If you spend your life gathering the one thing worth gathering, why worry about the rest? That one thing is the Name, the One's presence.

Think of a treasure hunt where you have already found the real chest of gold. Would you still scramble for plastic coins? Japji Sahib speaks of a hidden treasure like this. Raag Gauree says all treasures are within. Once you have the real wealth, chasing substitutes loses its grip.

A Question to Sit With

What is the one thing that, if you had it, would make chasing other things feel less urgent?
