The Pull Rules Only Those It Can Fool

ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥
sarpanee sarpanee ki-aa kahhu bhaa-ee.
O Siblings of Destiny, why is she called a she-serpent?
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਖਾਈ ॥੨॥
jin saach pachhaani-aa tin sarpanee khaa-ee. ||2||
One who realizes the True Lord, devours the she-serpent. ||2||

In plain words

Why is this pull pictured as a dangerous serpent?

Because the one who truly knows the One swallows it right up — masters it completely.

The tempting pull only has power over those it can fool — a heart rooted in the One masters it completely.
The deeper layer

This one says the pull only rules the people it can fool.

Kabir asks his own question. Why call her a snake? And he gives a surprising answer. Jin saach pachhaani-aa tin sarpanee khaa-ee — the one who knows the True One swallows the snake.

The picture flips. What looked like the scary hunter gets eaten up. The grabbing pull has power only over those it can scare or trick. To a heart rooted in the One, it is harmless, even useful.

Think of a rubber spider in a haunted house. It scares the kids who believe it is real. The kid who knows it is rubber just picks it up. Many songs in this raag say the same, including Kabir's song about the "shameless queen." Maya keeps the ones who chase her. The ones who know the One are free of her.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a person strong enough not to be fooled or frightened by a strong temptation?
