A Heart Free of Grasping Is Freed From Much Fear

ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਤੇ ਆਨ ਛੂਛ ਨਹੀ ਅਵਰਾ ॥
sarpanee tay aan chhoochh nahee avraa.
No one else is more frivolous than this she-serpent.
ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਜੀਤੀ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਜਮਰਾ ॥੩॥
sarpanee jeetee kahaa karai jamraa. ||3||
When the she-serpent is overcome, what can the Messengers of the King of Death do? ||3||

In plain words

Nothing is flightier or more fickle than this pull —

but once it's overcome, even the fear of the end can't touch you.

A heart that isn't ruled by grasping is also freed from a lot of fear — much of our dread comes from clutching.
The deeper layer

This one says a heart that stops grabbing is freed from a lot of fear.

Kabir says nothing is more fickle than this snake. The glittering pull flits around. It always promises and never satisfies.

Then he names the freedom. Once she is beaten, what can the messengers of death do? When wanting no longer rules you, even the big fear about the end of life loosens its grip.

Why? Because much of our fear comes from holding on tight. Think of gripping a handful of sand. The harder you squeeze, the more it slips, and the more you worry. Open your hand, and the worry goes too. A heart not ruled by wanting is not ruled by fear.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed that wanting something too badly can make you more anxious, not less?
