Verse 2 of 4

When Love Comes Home, It Calls for Singing

ਗਾਉ ਗਾਉ ਰੀ ਦੁਲਹਨੀ ਮੰਗਲਚਾਰਾ ॥
gaa-o gaa-o ree dulhanee mangalchaaraa.
Sing, sing, O brides of the Lord, the marriage songs of the Lord.
ਮੇਰੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਆਏ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mayray garih aa-ay raajaa raam bhataaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Lord, my King, has come to my house as my Husband. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Sing, everyone, sing the happy wedding songs!

The One I love has come home to my heart.

When the love you longed for finally comes home to your heart, it calls for singing and celebration.
The deeper layer

This one says when love comes home, it's time to sing.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad, the hymn. It is pure celebration. Gaa-o gaa-o ree dulhanee mangalchaaraa — sing, sing, O brides, the happy wedding songs. Why? Mayray garih aa-ay raajaa raam bhataaraa — the Lord, my King, has come to my house as my Husband.

The long-awaited meeting has happened. There's no holding back here, no stiff seriousness. Think of a family when someone dear walks in after a long trip: everyone rushes to the door. Kabir lets you feel and show big joy about what is good and holy. It is not quiet duty. It is wedding-day delight. When love comes home, you sing.

A Question to Sit With

What good news makes you so happy you want to sing or dance?
