Without Love, the Soul Cannot Bloom

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ॥
jo deesai so upjai binsai.
Whoever is seen, is subject to birth and death.
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin jal sarvar kamal na deesai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
In the pool without water, the lotus is not seen. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everything you can see is caught in being born and dying.

And in a pool with no water, no lotus can grow.

Without water no lotus grows — without love, the soul cannot bloom.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad.

A lotus needs water. Bin jal sarvar kamal na deesai — in a pool with no water, no lotus can be seen. Here the water is the Love, the kindness, of the One. Without it, the soul, the lotus, cannot bloom.

Jo deesai so upjai binsai — everything you can see is born and passes away. Your eyes alone cannot find what lasts forever. Like the swan, you have to draw it in from the inside. It is like a plant pulling water up through its roots, out of sight.

A Question to Sit With

What is the "water" your own growth depends on?
