Loving Your Family Isn't Clinging to Them

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਪੰਚਪਦੇ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 1 panchpaday.
Aasaa, First Mehl, Panch-Padas:
ਮੋਹੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭ ਕਾਰ ॥

Your attachment to your family, your attachment to all your affairs
ਮੋਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਤਜਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥੧॥
moh tum tajahu sagal vaykaar. ||1||
- renounce all your attachments, for they are all corrupt. ||1||

In plain words

You cling to your family. You cling to all your busy affairs.

Let go of all that clinging. It only tangles you up.

Loving your family and clinging to them anxiously are not the same thing.
The deeper layer

This one is about clinging, not about family.

Moh kutamb moh sabh kaar — clinging to family, clinging to all your affairs. The key word is moh, which means clinging: a tight, worried grip. The verse is traditionally read not as "leave your home," but as "find freedom right inside it."

Think of holding a handful of sand. Cupped gently, it stays in your hand. Squeeze it tight, and it slips through your fingers. What you let go of is the anxious squeeze, the grip that treats passing things as if you could keep them forever. Love your family. Let go of the clutching.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you love that you also hold a little too tightly?
