A Closed Fist Can't Receive What Lasts

ਏਤੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
ayt mohi fir joonee paahi.
In this attachment, people are reincarnated over and over again.
ਮੋਹੇ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੪॥
mohay laagaa jam pur jaahi. ||4||
Attached to emotional attachment, they go to the city of Death. ||4||

In plain words

Because of this clinging, people are born again and again;

held tight by attachment, they walk toward the city of Death.

A fist closed tight around what's passing can't receive what lasts.
The deeper layer

This one says a closed fist cannot receive what lasts.

Ayt mohi fir joonee paahi — in this clinging, people are born again and again. Clinging keeps the whole cycle of coming and going turning. The grip that can't let go of anything keeps the soul going round and round.

Jam pur means the city of Death. That is where the grip leads. This is less a threat than a clear look at the problem. Think of a hand clenched tight around an old toy. It can't take the new gift being held out. A fist closed around things that pass away cannot receive what lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to open your hand instead of clenching it?
