Verse 6 of 7

Having the Teaching Isn't Enough

ਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੇ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
gur deekhi-aa lay jap tap kamaahi.
You have received the Guru's Teachings - now practice meditation and penance.
ਨਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਤੂਟੈ ਨਾ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੫॥
naa moh tootai naa thaa-ay paahi. ||5||
If attachment is not broken, no one is approved. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You have received the Guru's teaching — now actually practice it.

If the clinging is not broken, no one is accepted.

Having the teaching isn't enough — the real test is whether your grip actually loosens.
The deeper layer

This one says having the teaching is not enough; you have to practice it.

Gur deekhi-aa lay jap tap kamaahi — you have received the Guru's teaching, so now practice. Here jap means remembering the One, and tap means steady, hard effort.

Then comes the honest bar. Naa moh tootai naa thaa-ay paahi — if the clinging does not break, no one is accepted. Think of piano lessons. Knowing the notes in your head is not the same as playing. Keeping the teaching in your head while your grip stays tight changes nothing. The real test is whether the clutching actually loosens.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you know you should practice, not just believe?
