But if the One casts its Glance of Grace, the clinging falls away.
Then, says Nanak, you stay merged in the One.
This one says grace is what finally opens the grip.
After all the urging to let go, the last word goes to grace. Nadar karay taa ayhu moh jaa-ay — if the One looks with kindness, this clinging goes away. Nadar is the One's glance of grace.
You can't simply force your own hand open. Grace loosens what you could not. Think of a stuck jar lid. You twist and twist, then someone who loves you helps, and it pops open. Effort and grace meet: you practice, and grace finishes the letting go. Then, says Nanak, a person stays merged in the One.
What is something you have tried to let go of by force, that only eased when you stopped struggling?
