Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One does everything — the real, unseen, endless One.
I am the one who does wrong; You are the One who forgives.
This one is about who does what. The One does everything. I am the one who slips, and You are the One who forgives.
The shabad opens with two plain statements side by side. First, the One is the real Doer: true, unseen, and without end. Then: ha-o paapee toon bakhsanhaar — "I am the one who does wrong; You are the One who forgives."
Saying this is not putting yourself down. It is just being honest about where you stand. Think of a child who spills juice and says, "I did that." The parent is already reaching for a towel. Knowing that you are the one who slips, and the One is the One who forgives, is where a good friendship with the One begins.
Why might it be a relief, not a shame, to honestly admit where you fall short?
