The Beloved Is Awake; We Sleep Through the Night

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 1.
Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਏਕ ਨ ਭਰੀਆ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਿ ਧੋਵਾ ॥
ayk na bharee-aa gun kar Dhovaa.
I am not stained by only one sin, that could be washed clean by virtue.
ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਹਉ ਨਿਸਿ ਭਰਿ ਸੋਵਾ ॥੧॥
mayraa saho jaagai ha-o nis bhar sovaa. ||1||
My Husband Lord is awake, while I sleep through the entire night of my life. ||1||

In plain words

It is not just one small mistake I could rinse away with a little goodness.

My Beloved stays awake all night long, while I sleep through the whole night of my life.

The Beloved is awake all night — the danger is that we sleep through the one night we are given.
The deeper layer

The shabad opens in honest self-knowledge: this is not a single stain a bit of virtue could wash out. The governing image is the sleeping bride — spiritual heedlessness — while the Beloved "remains awake" all through "the night of my life." The One is ever-attentive; the soul keeps dozing through the one chance it has.

A Question to Sit With

What important things do we sometimes "sleep through" without noticing?
