Asking How Can I Become Dear Is the Heart Waking

ਇਉ ਕਿਉ ਕੰਤ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਹੋਵਾ ॥
i-o ki-o kant pi-aaree hovaa.
In this way, how can I become dear to my Husband Lord?
ਸਹੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਹਉ ਨਿਸ ਭਰਿ ਸੋਵਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saho jaagai ha-o nis bhar sovaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My Husband Lord remains awake, while I sleep through the entire night of my life. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Living like this, how could I ever become dear to my Beloved?

He stays awake while I sleep through the entire night of my life.

Longing that asks "how can I become dear?" is already the heart waking up.
The deeper layer

The Pause repeats the ache as a question — the refrain of the whole first shabad. The sorrow is not guilt for its own sake but longing: "how can I become dear?" The repetition itself enacts the restless turning of a soul that knows something is wrong and cannot yet fix it.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever wanted to be close to someone and not known how?
