Even now I am still held by hope and longing.
I feel low, as if there were no hope at all.
Sometimes the lowest point comes right before the turn — and naming it honestly is part of healing.
The third refrain marks the lowest point: still "held by hope and desire," the bride sinks into something close to despair. The poem is honest that the turn does not come quickly — there is a real valley of "no hope at all" before the dawn. Naming the bottom truthfully is part of the healing.
A Question to Sit With
Why might it help, not hurt, to admit honestly when you feel low?
