Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 51
Verse 9 of 13

Easy, While Comfortable, to Take the Precious for Granted

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 1.
Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਪੇਵਕੜੈ ਧਨ ਖਰੀ ਇਆਣੀ ॥
payvkarhai Dhan kharee i-aanee.
In this world of my father's house, I, the soul-bride, have been very childish;
ਤਿਸੁ ਸਹ ਕੀ ਮੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
tis sah kee mai saar na jaanee. ||1||
I did not realize the value of my Husband Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Here in my first home, my childhood home, I was foolish;

I never understood how precious my Beloved was.

It is easy, while young and comfortable, to take for granted what is most precious.
The deeper layer

The second shabad begins with the two-homes image: the father's house (peke ghar) is this life, where the soul-bride is "childish" and fails to value the Beloved. Youth here is not innocence but un-seriousness — taking for granted the One whose worth she has not yet grasped.

A Question to Sit With

What do people often fail to value until later, when they understand it better?
