Money Buys Many Shelters, Not the One That Lasts

ਲਖ ਖਟੀਅਹਿ ਲਖ ਸੰਜੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਜਹਿ ਲਖ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
lakh khatee-ah lakh sanjee-ah khaajeh lakh aavahi lakh jaahi.
You may earn thousands, collect thousands, and spend thousands of dollars; thousands may come, and thousands may go.
ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਅ ਕਿਥੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
jaaN pat laykhai naa pavai taaN jee-a kithai fir paahi. ||2||
But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then where will you go to find a safe haven? ||2||

In plain words

You may earn thousands, pile up thousands, spend thousands; thousands come in and thousands go out.

But if you count for nothing before the One, where will you ever find a safe place to rest?

Money can buy many shelters, but not the one safe place that actually lasts.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak is saying: money can buy many shelters, but not the one that lasts.

Now the list of "thousands" turns to money. Lakh khatee-ah lakh sanjee-ah khaajeh — you may earn thousands, save thousands, spend thousands. Money flows in and money flows out, again and again.

Then comes the question no one can answer. If you do not count with the One, jee-a kithai fir paahi — where will your soul find shelter? A bank account can buy a house, a lock and an alarm. It cannot buy a safe place for the soul. However full the accounts, the one who does not count with the One has no final place to rest.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel truly safe — and is it something money could buy?
