Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 67
Verse 3 of 5

Closer Than Your Breath and Farther Than Any Reach

ਸਬਦੁ ਚਾਖੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
sabad chaakhai saachaa saad paa-ay.
One who has tasted the Shabad, obtains the true flavor.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
har kaa naam man vasaa-ay.
The Name of the Lord abides within his mind.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
har parabh sadaa rahi-aa bharpoor.
The Lord God is Eternal and All-pervading.
ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
aapay nayrhai aapay door. ||2||
He Himself is near, and He Himself is far away. ||2||

In plain words

Whoever has actually tasted the Word knows the true flavor; the Name comes to live in the mind.

The One is forever and everywhere —

at once nearer than near, and far beyond reach.

The One is closer than your breath and farther than any reach — both at once.
The deeper layer

This one holds two big ideas: you know the One by tasting, and the One is both near and far.

First, tasting. Sabad chaakhai saachaa saad paa-ay — whoever tastes the Word gets the true flavor. You can read all about mango, but you only really know it once it is in your mouth. The sweetness of the One, the Har Ras, is like that.

Second, aapay nayrhai aapay door — He Himself is near, and He Himself is far away. The One lives inside you, closer than your own breath. The same One is also beyond anything you could ever reach or hold.

These do not fight each other. Together they are the whole truth. Think of the sky. It touches your face as air, and it also stretches past every star.

A Question to Sit With

Can something be a total mystery and completely familiar to you at the same time?
