Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 67
Verse 4 of 5

Anyone Can Talk of the One; Reaching Is His Doing

ਆਖਣਿ ਆਖੈ ਬਕੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
aakhan aakhai bakai sabh ko-ay.
Everyone talks and speaks through speech;
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥
aapay bakhas milaa-ay so-ay.
the Lord Himself forgives, and unites us with Himself.
ਕਹਣੈ ਕਥਨਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
kahnai kathan na paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
By merely speaking and talking, He is not obtained.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੩॥
gur parsaad vasai man aa-ay. ||3||
By Guru's Grace, He comes to abide in the mind. ||3||

In plain words

Everyone speaks and chatters with words;

but it is the One who forgives and draws us in.

Talk alone does not reach the One; only by grace does the One come to live in the mind.

Anyone can talk about the One — but reaching it is the One's own doing.
The deeper layer

Anyone can talk about the One, but reaching the One is the One's own doing.

Kahnai kathan na paa-i-aa jaa-ay — by only speaking and talking, He is not found. Another shabad says the same about the limit of words. Talking about swimming does not get you across the pool.

Then comes the hopeful part. "The Lord Himself forgives, and unites us with Himself." The step from talk to closeness is a gift. It comes by grace, gur parsaad, the Guru's kindness. It is not won by clever speaking.

So the One does not wait for perfect words. The One comes to live in the mind as a gift.

A Question to Sit With

When has talking about something been easy, while actually doing it was the hard part?
