Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 68
Verse 5 of 5

The Truest Cleansing Bath Is the Pool Within

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਜਾਏ ॥
gur kee banee naam vajaa-ay.
Through the Word of the Guru's Bani, the Naam resounds;
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਹਲੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
naanak mahal sabad ghar paa-ay.
O Nanak, through the Word of the Shabad, one finds the Mansion of the Lord's Presence within the home of the heart.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਤ ਸਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਲਿ ਨਾਇਆ ॥
gurmat sat sar har jal naa-i-aa.
Under Guru's Instruction, bathe in the Pool of Truth, in the Water of the Lord;
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਰਤੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੫॥੪੪॥
durmat mail sabh durat gavaa-i-aa. ||4||5||44||
thus the filth of evil-mindedness and sin shall all be washed away. ||4||5||44||

In plain words

Through the Guru's Word the Name rings out; and so, says Nanak, you find the One's own home right inside your heart.

Guided by the Guru, bathe in the Pool of Truth,

and all the grime of meanness and wrong is washed away.

The truest cleansing bath is inside you — in the Pool of Truth, not any outer river.
The deeper layer

The One's home is right inside your heart, and the truest bath is there too.

Through the Bani, the Guru's words, the Name rings out. Through the Word, you find the One's mahal, or mansion, inside the home of your own heart. Another shabad in this raag calls this inner place the Tenth Gate.

Gurmat sat sar har jal naa-i-aa — with the Guru's guidance, bathe in the pool of truth, in the One's water. Sar means pool. Many people travel to holy rivers to bathe. Here the verse points to a pool within. Think of washing your hands with soap. The water cleans the outside. The pool of truth cleans the inside, where meanness and wrongdoing sit. That is where the real grime gets washed away.

A Question to Sit With

What truly leaves you feeling clean on the inside?
