Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 72
Verse 3 of 5

The Bath That Cleanses Is the Nectar Within

ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਏ ॥
gur pooray tay pooraa paa-ay.
Through the Perfect Guru, the Perfect Lord is obtained,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
hirdai sabad sach naam vasaa-ay.
and the Shabad, the True Name, is enshrined in the mind.
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਏ ॥
antar nirmal amrit sar naa-ay.
One who bathes in the Pool of Ambrosial Nectar becomes immaculately pure within.
ਸਦਾ ਸੂਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੨॥
sadaa soochay saach samaa-ay. ||2||
He becomes forever sanctified, and is absorbed in the True Lord. ||2||

In plain words

Through the perfect Guru the perfect One is found, and the Word, the True Name, settles in the mind.

Whoever bathes in the Pool of Nectar becomes spotless within —

made holy for good, and melted into the True One.

The bath that truly cleanses is the inner one — in the Nectar of the Name.
The deeper layer

The bath that truly makes you clean is inside you.

People have long traveled to holy rivers to bathe. This verse moves that journey inward. Antar nirmal amrit sar naa-ay — whoever bathes in the pool of nectar becomes spotless within. The pool, or sarovar, is not an outside river. It is the sweet nectar of the Name, the One's presence, taken into the heart.

Think of washing your hands versus clearing a worry out of your mind. Soap helps the first. Only something inside can help the second. This inner bath makes you clean for good, sadaa soochay, a clean that stays. It comes through the perfect Guru, who settles the True Name in the heart.

A Question to Sit With

What leaves you feeling clean and renewed on the inside, not just the outside?
