Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The Guru is the ocean, Truth itself made real.
By great good fortune one comes to serve the Guru.
Only the one the One awakens truly understands; by the Guru's grace, one serves.
Even understanding is a gift: you are woken up into it.
Gur saa-ir satgur sach so-ay — the Guru is the ocean; the True Guru is Truth itself. An ocean has no end, and Truth is as real as it gets. So the Guru is both boundless and completely real.
So boojhai jis aap bujhaa-ay — only the one whom the One helps to understand truly understands. We cannot force understanding by trying harder. It is more like waking up in the morning. You do not make the sun rise. Its light reaches you, and you wake.
Even serving the Guru is grace. Gur parsaadee sayv karaa-ay — by the Guru's kindness, one is led to serve. The whole thing begins in a gift and ends in a gift.
Has a deep understanding ever arrived in you almost on its own, when you were ready?
