Real Understanding Burns Pride and Steadies You

ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
moh gumaan gur sabad jalaa-ay.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, attachment and pride are burnt away.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
pooray gur tay sojhee paa-ay.
From the Perfect Guru, true understanding is obtained.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
antar mahal gur sabad pachhaanai.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, one realizes the Lord's Presence within.
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ॥੨॥
aavan jaan rahai thir naam samaanay. ||2||
Then, one's coming and going cease, and one becomes stable, absorbed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

Through the Word, clinging and pride are burned away; from the perfect Guru, real understanding comes.

Through the Word, you find the One present within you —

and then your coming and going stop, and you grow steady, absorbed in the Name.

Real understanding doesn't just inform you — it burns away pride and steadies you.
The deeper layer

Real understanding burns away pride and makes you steady.

Moh gumaan gur sabad jalaa-ay — through the Guru's Word, clinging and pride are burned away. Moh is clinging to things and people as if they were ours forever. Gumaan is pride. The Word, the Sabad, works on them like a fire.

The big idea is that understanding does the work, not willpower. It is like being afraid of the dark until someone turns on the light. You did not fight the fear away. You just saw clearly, and the fear left.

And then you grow steady. Aavan jaan rahai — the coming and going stops. The restless circling calms down, and the soul rests in the Name, naam samaanay.

A Question to Sit With

What understanding has actually changed how you live, not just what you know?
