The Truest Dance Is Shedding Your Ego

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥
gurmukh nirat har laagai bhaa-o.
The Gurmukh's dance is to embrace love for the Lord;
ਪੂਰੇ ਤਾਲ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
pooray taal vichahu aap gavaa-ay.
to the beat of the drum, he sheds his ego from within.
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
mayraa parabh saachaa aapay jaan.
My God is True; He Himself is the Knower of all.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
gur kai sabad antar barahm pachhaan. ||2||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, recognize the Creator Lord within yourself. ||2||

In plain words

The Gurmukh's dance is to embrace love for the One;

to the beat of that drum, he sheds his ego from inside.

My God is real, and He Himself knows everything. Through the Word, find the Maker right inside yourself.

The truest dance isn't moving your feet — it's shedding your ego to the rhythm of love.
The deeper layer

The truest dance is letting your ego drop away.

Gurmukh nirat har laagai bhaa-o — the Gurmukh's dance is to hold on to love for the One. Pooray taal vichahu aap gavaa-ay — to the beat of the drum, they let go of aap, the proud "me" inside.

The show-off moves their feet so others will watch. The Gurmukh's ego steps out of the way instead. That is the real dance. Picture a team player who passes the ball instead of hogging it. No one cheers for the pass. But the whole game gets better. The verse ends by saying the One knows everything. Through the Guru's Word, you find the Maker right inside yourself. This is Guru Amar Das echoing Guru Nanak's inner dance (Shabad 31).

A Question to Sit With

What would it look like to "dance" by letting go instead of showing off?
