A Life That Gathers No Goodness Keeps Circling

ਗੁਣ ਵਿਹੂਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

Those without virtue are stained by Maya's filth.
ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਜਨਮਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
vin gun janam mu-ay ahaNkaaree. ||3||
Lacking virtue, the egotistical die, and suffer reincarnation. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Those without virtue are stained by the filth of grasping;

lacking virtue, the proud die and circle back again.

A life that gathers no real goodness stays stained and keeps circling.
The deeper layer

The contrast: a virtueless life is "stained by Maya's filth," and the egotistical keep dying and being reborn — the restless cycle of a soul that never gathered what lasts. Virtue (gun) is what the next pauri will picture as pearls; its absence is what leaves a life stained and circling.

A Question to Sit With

What good qualities are you gathering that will still matter long from now?
