The Power That Raises and Dissolves Gives the Name

ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥

He Himself establishes, and, having established, disestablishes.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ॥੪॥੬॥੫੮॥
naanak naam dayvai har aapay. ||4||6||58||
O Nanak, the Lord Himself bestows the Naam. ||4||6||58||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One Himself sets up, and having set up, takes down.

Says Nanak: the One Himself gives the Name.

The same power that raises and dissolves everything is the One that gives you the Name.
The deeper layer

The close returns to divine agency: "He Himself establishes, and disestablishes" (cf. Shabad 74). The same One who raises and dissolves all things is the One who "bestows the Naam." The gift of the Name comes from the very power that runs the whole of existence — which is why it is the one sure thing to hold.

A Question to Sit With

What would you most want to hold onto, knowing everything else rises and passes?
