Verse 5 of 5

The Way Out of Ego Isn't Effort but the Name

ਜੇ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਵਡ ਊਚੇ ॥
jay vad bhaag hoveh vad oochay.
If one's destiny is great and exalted,
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸੂਚੇ ॥੪॥੭॥੫੯॥
naanak naam jaapeh sach soochay. ||4||7||59||
O Nanak, one chants the Naam, the Name of the Immaculate, True Lord. ||4||7||59||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If one's destiny is great and high,

then, says Nanak, one chants the Name of the spotless, True One.

The way out of the ego's futile cycle isn't more effort — it's the gift of the Name.
The deeper layer

The close is brief and humble: chanting the Name is itself a sign of "great and exalted destiny" — grace, not the seeker's cleverness. After the warning about the self-dusting elephant, this is the relief: the way out of the ego's futile cycle is not more effort but the gift of the Name, given by good destiny.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that only got better when you stopped forcing it and let it be given?
