Hearing the Naam, my mind is satisfied, O my Siblings of Destiny. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My mind aches with hunger for the Name of the One.

Hearing the Name, my mind is satisfied, O Siblings of Destiny.

A real hunger for the Name is already the start of being fed.
The deeper layer

A real hunger for the Name is already being fed.

Har har naam kee man bhookh lagaa-ee — my mind is hungry for the Name of the One. Then comes the answer. Naam suni-ai man triptai — hearing the Name, my mind is satisfied.

This hunger is a good thing, a holy hunger. Another shabad speaks of it too. Think of how your tummy rumbles before dinner. The rumble is not a problem. It is what makes the meal taste so good.

A mind that longs for the One is already turning toward it. The longing is the first step of the journey.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good hunger in you — a longing that points you toward something worth having?
