Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Chant the Name, O my friends, O GurSikhs.

Chant it and find peace; through the Guru's teaching, keep the Name enshrined in your heart and mind.

Keep the Name lodged in your heart, not just visiting — and do it among friends.
The deeper layer

Keep the Name living in your heart, not just visiting.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It opens warmly: naam japahu mayray gursikh meetaa — say the Name, my friends, my fellow GurSikhs, students of the Guru. It is an invitation to friends, like a call to join a game.

The steps are simple. Say the Name. Find peace in it. And through the Guru's teaching, naam rakhahu man cheetaa, keep the Name in your heart and mind.

There is a difference between a guest and someone who lives in your home. The verse asks us to let the Name move in and stay. Guru Ram Das always sings of this path as something friends walk together.

A Question to Sit With

Who would you want beside you while pursuing something that matters?
