Gather the Name and the Soul Opens Like a Flower

ਨਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਰਸਾ ॥
naamo naam sunee man sarsaa.
Hearing the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mind is in bliss.
ਨਾਮੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਗਸਾ ॥੨॥
naam laahaa lai gurmat bigsaa. ||2||
Reaping the profit of the Naam, through the Guru's Teachings, my soul has blossomed forth. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Hearing the Name, the mind is in bliss.

Reaping the profit of the Name, through the Guru's teaching, my soul has blossomed.

Gather the Name, and the soul opens like a flower — it unfolds, it isn't forced.
The deeper layer

Gather the Name, and the soul opens like a flower.

Naam laahaa lai gurmat bigsaa — taking the profit of the Name through the Guru's teaching, my soul has blossomed. Bigsaa, or vigaas, means to bloom.

A flower is not pulled open by hand. If you tried, you would tear it. It opens by itself when the sun is warm. In the same way, hearing and gathering the Name lets the soul open gently.

The verse calls the Name a laahaa, a profit. Other shabads say it is the one investment that always pays. Here we see what it pays: a soul in bloom.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt yourself "open up" rather than being pushed?
