All Effort Is Wasted If the Mind Wanders Off

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਰਾਗ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਖੇਲ ॥
gaavahi raag bhaat baho boleh ih manoo-aa khaylai khayl.
You sing in so many Ragas and harmonies, and you talk so much, but this mind of yours is only playing a game.

You work the well and irrigate the fields, but the oxen have already left to graze in the jungle. ||2||

In plain words

You sing in so many tunes and harmonies, you talk and talk — but this mind of yours is only playing a game.

You work the well and water the fields — but the oxen have already wandered off to graze in the jungle.

All your careful effort is wasted if your mind has wandered off the job.
The deeper layer

A devastating farming image: you irrigate the field, but "the oxen have already left to graze in the jungle." All the careful work — the singing, the talking, the watering — is wasted because the mind (the ox that should be pulling the plough) has wandered off. Effort without the mind present is labor poured onto an unworked field (cf. Shabad 44, the heart-as-farm).

A Question to Sit With

When has your body been busy at something while your mind was somewhere else entirely?
