Pride Slowly Eats the One Who Carries It

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
antar vasat anayk manmukh nahee paa-ee-ai.
Deep within are infinite substances, but the self-willed manmukh does not find them.

In egotism and pride, the mortal's proud self consumes him. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Deep within are endless riches — but the self-willed never find them.

Wrapped in ego and pride, the proud self eats itself up.

Pride doesn't just hide your treasure — it slowly eats the one who carries it.
The deeper layer

The tragedy of the manmukh: the "infinite substances" are within him too, but "the self-willed manmukh does not find them." The barrier is haumai — "the mortal's proud self consumes him." The ego does not just block the treasure; it devours the one who carries it. Pride is self-cannibalizing.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how pride can quietly consume a person from the inside?
