Drawn Like a Bee to the Lotus It Can't Leave

ਹਮਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗ ਬਿਰਕਤੁ ਭਇਓ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਮੀਤ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ॥
hamraa man bairaag birkat bha-i-o har darsan meet kai taa-ee.
My mind has become sad and distant, longing for the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, my Friend.

As the bumblebee cannot live without the lotus, I cannot live without the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My mind has grown sad and far-off, longing for the sight of my Beloved, my Friend.

As a bumblebee cannot live without the lotus, I cannot live without the One.

Like a bumblebee to the lotus, the soul is drawn to a beauty it cannot stay away from.
The deeper layer

Another nature-simile: the bumblebee and the lotus — the bee drawn irresistibly to the flower, unable to stay away. The mind is "sad and distant," aching for Darshan (the sight of the Beloved). This is viraha at its most lyrical: the soul pictured as a small creature helplessly drawn to the beauty it cannot live without.

A Question to Sit With

What beauty draws you so strongly that you can't stay away from it?
