To the Wise, What Enslaves Others Becomes a Servant

ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੀ ਹੋਇ ਵਰਤੀ ਦਾਸਿ ॥
gi-aanee kee ho-ay vartee daas.
She is the slave of those who are spiritually wise.
ਕਰ ਜੋੜੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
kar jorhay sayvaa karay ardaas.
With her palms pressed together, she serves them and offers her prayer:
ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਕਹਹਿ ਸੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਾ ॥
jo tooN kaheh so kaar kamaavaa.
"Whatever you wish, that is what I shall do."
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵਾ ॥੪॥੧॥
jan naanak gurmukh nayrh na aavaa. ||4||1||
O servant Nanak, she does not draw near to the Gurmukh. ||4||1||

In plain words

But to those who are truly wise, it becomes a servant.

Hands folded, it serves them and says, "Whatever you wish, I will do."

Says Nanak: it does not even come near the one whose face is turned to the Guru.

To the wise, the very thing that enslaves others becomes a servant.
The deeper layer

This one says that what rules other people becomes a helper to the wise.

Here comes a big turnaround. Gi-aanee kee ho-ay vartee daas — Maya becomes the servant of those who are truly wise. Everywhere else, it acts like the boss. To the Gurmukh, the person whose face is turned to the Guru, it is not destroyed. It is moved down. It serves instead of rules.

Think of a phone. For some people, the phone runs their whole day. For others, the phone is just a tool they pick up when they need it. The phone is the same. Who is in charge is different.

This is a win for people living ordinary family lives. You do not need to run away from the world. You simply put it in its proper place, below the One.

A Question to Sit With

What would it look like to put something in its proper place instead of letting it run your life?
