The Pressures Lose Their Grip Once You Know You're Safe

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਸਸੂ ਤੇ ਪਿਰਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਵਾਖਿ ॥
sasoo tay pir keenee vaakh.
I have been separated from my Beloved by Maya (my mother-in-law).
ਦੇਰ ਜਿਠਾਣੀ ਮੁਈ ਦੂਖਿ ਸੰਤਾਪਿ ॥

Hope and desire (my younger brother-in-law and sister-in-law) are dying of grief.
ਘਰ ਕੇ ਜਿਠੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਚੂਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ॥
ghar kay jithayray kee chookee kaan.
I am no longer swayed by the fear of Death (my elder brother-in-law).
ਪਿਰਿ ਰਖਿਆ ਕੀਨੀ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ॥੧॥

I am protected by my All-knowing, Wise Husband Lord. ||1||

In plain words

Maya — like a harsh mother-in-law — kept me apart from my Beloved.

Hope and craving — like a meddling brother- and sister-in-law — are now dying of grief.

The fear of death — like a stern elder brother-in-law — no longer pushes me around, for my all-knowing, wise Beloved protects me.

The pressures that kept you from what you love lose their grip once you know you are protected.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan maps the soul's inner obstacles onto an in-law household: Maya the mother-in-law who keeps the bride from her Husband, hope and desire the meddling younger in-laws, the fear of death the bullying elder. One by one they lose their power — because the wise Husband (the One) protects the bride (cf. Shabad 47, Maya as mother-in-law).

A Question to Sit With

What pressures around you act like meddling relatives, getting between you and what matters?
