A Guest Can Seize the Whole House If You Let It

ਘਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਇਕਿ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਵੈ ॥
ghar kee naa-ik ghar vaas na dayvai.
She has become the mistress of my home, and she does not allow me to live in it.
ਜਤਨ ਕਰਉ ਉਰਝਾਇ ਪਰੇਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jatan kara-o urjhaa-ay parayvai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
If I try, she fights with me. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

It has made itself the mistress of my house and won't let me live there.

If I try, it picks a fight.

What was meant to be a guest can seize the whole house if you let it.
The deeper layer

Something meant to be a guest has taken over the house.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Ghar kee naa-ik ghar vaas na dayvai — she has made herself the boss of my home and will not let me live in it. Jatan kara-o urjhaa-ay parayvai — if I try, she picks a fight.

Maya, the pull of worldly things, should be a guest. Instead she has taken over. Think of a game you meant to play for ten minutes. Soon it is deciding when you eat and sleep, and it complains when you try to stop. The soul has been pushed out of its own home by the very thing it was meant to be in charge of.

A Question to Sit With

Has something small in your life slowly taken over more than its share?
