Even the Goodness You Bring Was a Gift

saahi pathaa-i-aa saahai paas.
The Trader has sent me to the Banker.

The jewel is priceless, and the capital is priceless.

O my gentle brother, mediator and friend

- I have obtained the merchandise, and my consciousness is now steady and stable. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Trader sent me on to the Banker.

The jewel is priceless, and the capital is priceless.

O kind broker and friend — I have the merchandise now, and my mind is steady and still.

Even the goodness you bring to the deal was itself a priceless gift.
The deeper layer

The chain of the transaction: the Trader (Guru) sends the soul to the Banker (God), the ultimate source of the priceless jewel. Note that "the capital is priceless" too — even the virtue you bring was itself a gift of infinite worth. The result of the deal is a mind "steady and stable" — the Name purchased brings inner stillness.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing in you might have been given to you, before you ever "earned" anything?
